Special characters encoding in Excel

Encoding UTF-8 in Excel

Special characters on the CSV files are encoded in UTF-8. When opening a CSV in many versions of Excel, sometimes these characters are not correctly decoded. Here is a quick guide on how to get around this problem.

To open the CSV file in Excel

  1. Go to Excel and open a new workbook

  2. Go to the Data tab and select From Text

  1. Select the CSV file that you want to open and select Get Data

  2. On the pop-up window, choose "Delimited" and under "File origin" select Unicode (UTF-8) from the drop-down list.

5. On the next page select "Comma" under Delimiters and click Finish

  1. Choose what cell you want the data to start in and that's it! You should see all your characters correctly in your Excel spreadsheet.
